With the recent release of Prometheus in theaters, I was reminded of the upcoming game Aliens: Colonial Marines Developed by Gearbox Software (who brought us games including Borderlands and Duke Nukem Forever) and Published by Sega.
I had the opportunity to play Aliens: Colonial Marines at PAX East 2012 and I was imidiately blown away. I played the online four on four multiplayer and it was human VS. aliens. There were different alien species along with different classes of humans that created a really cool and interesting gameplay dynamic .
I’ll admit that I do enjoy the Alien movies, but I wouldn’t call myself a “diehard” fan. I kind of lost a little interest in the franchise after the Alien VS. Predator movies. However Gearbox’s presentation and attention to detail in Aliens: Colonial Marines is fantastic. Alien: Colonial Marines is considered canon in the Alien franchise by 20th Century Fox, and takes place right after the end of Alien 3. Another thing that was really cool was that the main plot of Alien: Colonial Marines was written by Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, two writers for Battlestar Galactica which I’m a huge fan of.
Aliens: Colonial Marines has been in development for a long time dating back to 2001 on the Playstation 2. During this time 20th Century Fox under Fox Interactive had owned the rights to making games for the Alien franchise. They had cancelled a game called Alien: Colonial Marines which was being developed. In 2006 the electronic rights for the Alien franchise were purchased by Sega, and several days later Sega announced that they’d be working with Gearbox Software on the game. The official tittle Aliens: Colonial Marines was announced on February 2008 and was featured on a cover issue of Game Informer. Over the years the game has kept being delayed, however on May 21st, 2012 Gearbox Software officially announced the launch date for February 12th, 2013.
Aliens: Colonial Marines has certainly been in development for a long time, but it’s really great to see the attention to detail that Gearbox Software is doing to stay true to the Alien franchise and story. I personally can’t wait to purchase this game and shoot up some alien scum when it comes out.
