Post Clone Consoles

I'm an original hardware man. I love having my retro collection and I'm not a huge fan of clone consoles. This is mostly because of the poor experiences I've had with clones. I owned a Hyberkin RetroN3 and I just can't get over the bad taste from it. The wireless controllers were complete crap responses wise and felt very cheaply built. The console itself, while the candy red color of the console was beautiful to me, it also felt cheaply made. The NES controller ports were too tight, Genesis controller ports too loose and over all they were very strange to have on the sides of the machine. with in hours the SNES selection dial no longer worked. Genesis read fine, NES read fine, SNES would not read cartridges at all. The Genesis was also very poorly emulated sound and color wise as all other clones tend to do. The NES colors and sound was also off, as expected, and many mappers were not supported on it. Over all it was on of the biggest wastes of money I've ever done. Flushing the money down the toilet would have been a better use of it for me.

This all being said, I don't completely hate all clones. As a matter of fact, I've found one I love. Ironically enough it is yet another product by Hyperkin called the Supaboy.

Many people have done reviews on this handheld, including Gamster81 himself. I've gotta agree with the majority, this clone is fantastic. It looks nice, it feels well built and it plays well built. Besides, you can't get an official handheld Super Nintendo or SFC. If you enjoyed the Sega Nomad for your Genesis needs - you'll love the Supaboy for SNES / SFC.

What are you thoughts on clones? Do you own any and if so how do you like them?

I don't own any clones so I can't give a very informed opinion but I think as long as they're built well they have good potential. I love clone consoles that make their name similar to the original product name like the treamcast or polystation or that look like one console but play games for a different console than the one it resembles like the polystation 2. I don't know why but I find them hilarious and charming.

Clones generally don't appeal to me, but I got a Supaboy v2 on Black Friday, and I'm pretty pleased with it. I missed out on the SNES originally, so it seemed like a good way to start a collection. It's not perfect, but the flaws are mostly very small. I just wish their NES handheld had the same design considerations.

I have heard great things on the SupaBoy and one clone that I have that I enjoy is the FC 16 Go Version 2. A portable SNES before the Supaboy was released. The wireless controllers are nice looks great when you hook it to a modern HDTV, and plays all of my games. The only game I had trouble with was Kirby Super-Star, now it would play it but I would have to trial and error like 7 or 8 times. But it would eventually play. It also played Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Starfox & Super Mario RPG flawlessly.

I have the Retron3...and originally I thought it was pretty cool, but between weird sound issues...and bizarre colors on NES games... it quickly lost it's luster. That said, the one thing I do use it for is Super Famicom games via S-Video, which looks great!

Clones really dont catch me up. They dont have new issues that could please me. If the wireless controllers were really great and HDMI improvement maybe I would go for them. As a retro collector, I am really not against reloading consoles but I feel much more pleased grabbing the original models, connecting them on my TV and of course showing them to my friends who share the same interests of me.
On the go, for what you guys are telling, the SupaBoy maybe works well. But while I own the original cartridges, I prefer load them on my Dingoo or on my XPeria Play (I never made a Phone call on it, only to watch things or play). At least one of them is always on my bag.
