Basic Fun Pac Man LCD MiniCade!

Released by Basic Fun, this little Pac Man LCD Minicade is quite well done.   The unit features arcade authentic sounds and game play plus includes a second game called chase!  In this bonus game you try to eat one of four power pellets and try to get back to the center of the maze and drop it off, but look out! there is a door on the central room you have to wait until it opens to get into the center of the maze!   I really like this added bonus game, it adds a whole new element to the pac man formula.  It kind of reminds me of the arcade game Turtles.

The packaging is very nice and has some great Pac Man illustrations.   The mincade has four main buttons – On/Off, three level volume, start/pause and mode.   When you pause the game it will play the intermission song until you press the pause again to play.   the mode button allows you to either select Pac Man Arcade or Chase!

It plays rather well, very reminiscent of game play of the Coleco Mini Pac Man.  Pac Man only faces one direction in the maze but you can eat dots regardless of which way he is facing.  The maze is very similar to the arcade version of pac man which is a very nice touch.  The high score is retained until either the batteries are replaced or if the small reset button is depressed in back of the unit.  The plastic housing feels very sturdy and is a nice bright Pac Man yellow!

Pros:

  1. Authentic arcade sounds!
  2. Pause feature!
  3. Two game modes!
  4. High Score retention!
  5. Nice artwork!

Cons:

  1. Screen can be hard to see in some orientations.
  2. Joystick uses carbon dot silicon mushroom pads, can become unresponsive at times.
  3. Although there are two speaker grills, only one speaker is used.
  4. Monochrome color, would have been nice to use layered LCD to give some color on the screen.

Overall I really like this Minicade!.  Even with the screen limitations, it is still very enjoyable to play!
