For me there are mainly two consoles if you're into homebrew and those are The Vectrex and The Dreamcast. Many high quality games to find there.

I love the homebrews for the X68000, such as Galseed 2. They actually had entire dōujin contests for games, and then they would be published in a magazine with instructions on how to write them onto floppies. Since that system is quite expensive, you could always get a Commodore 64. Had some great homebrews due to how easy it was.

A shooter would be perfect on the Virtual Boy. Hell Doom was on the gameboy colour.
